CranioSomatics: A Cranial Approach to Treating Musculoskeletal Dysfunctions

The Hancock CranioSomatic Institute has been presenting workshops in effective cranial techniques in the U.S. and internationally since 1989.  Our mission is to train healthcare professionals in cranial techniques and related therapies that improve neuromusculoskeletal function and enhance patients’ quality of life.

Our workshops, seminars, and lectures present CranioSomatic Therapy techniques developed by Dr. G. Dallas Hancock and Dr. Flo Barber-Hancock; these include CranioStructural Integration and Facilitated Pathways Intervention.  The unique approach of CranioSomatic therapies can enhance athletic performance and provide long-term relief for patients whose lives are compromised by pain or dysfunction.

CranioSomatic Therapy

CranioSomatic    the concept that dysfunctions of the cranial mechanism are reflected in musculoskeletal responses throughout the body. The muscle changes are predictable, and can be demonstrated. These CranioSomatic concepts provide a new understanding of the structural and functional relationships between the head and the body.

®

CranioSomatic Therapy is the therapeutic application of CranioSomatic concepts. It is an integrative and holistic approach to treating many common dysfunctional and painful conditions – particularly those involving muscles and joints. ‘Cranio’ refers to the head, and ‘Somatic’ refers to the muscles of the body.

It is a structural cranial approach that mobilizes and realigns cranial structures, rather than an energy or fluid approach. CranioSomatic Therapy helps restore muscle balance and shift the body’s whole structure into a more comfortable and functional alignment. Changes in muscle function are achieved using only these hands-on cranial techniques with a firm but gentle touch.

Why is this innovative cranial approach more effective and longer-lasting than other therapies?

Because it improves balance throughout the body! CranioSomatic Therapy is structural, which enables it to provide more long-term effectiveness in relieving:

  • Dizziness and vertigo

  • Headaches

  • TMJ dysfunctions and pain

  • Neck, shoulder and arm pain

  • Back pain

  • Sciatica and leg pain

  • Functional short leg

  • Functional scoliosis (Link for therapy inquiries)

The core concept of the CranioSomatic approach is that the cranial bones, spinal column, and pelvis form a single integrated unit in which all three are mutually compensatory. Whenever there is a change in one of these components, coordinated changes in muscle function occur throughout the body. CranioSomatic therapy always has specific goals, and outcomes can be physically evaluated.

Hancock CranioSomatic Institute offers workshops and Certification for all healthcare professionals.  CE (continuing education) credits are available for Massage Therapy and Physical Therapy professions. Our therapies have success in healthcare fields such as Chiropractic, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, Massage, and others. Providers who want to help their patients return to a more comfortable and normal life will be excited about the improvements that CranioSomatic therapy can offer. Our courses are taught in four related groups of workshops.
